Work In Progress

“Work in Progress” is a joint representation of both what my personal practice has become and how my teaching practice intertwines with it. Initially I was motivated by the idea of art therapy, and I wondered how I could implement the benefits of it into the community through similar techniques. The workshops I facilitated with young people around various alternative processes let me gain insight into how the arts are implemented in the education system and how the children mentally responded to tactile creativity and challenging tasks. It surprised me that although many of them had never been introduced to a task like this, they came at it with inquisitive minds and impressive imagination. With gentle guidance they were able to produce some incredible pieces of art whilst enjoying and benefitting from the process. Their enthusiasm and playfulness made me think deeply about why I make art and what I can learn from them through this. I have since begun treating photography as my own personal therapy, making shoots a therapeutic ritual and post-production in the darkroom being a creative outlet to stop worrying about perfecting everything and have my work just represent myself. I have developed a partnership that allows my own personal skills to develop alongside growing my teaching skills which has strongly changed my perspective on my own intentions.
